1320 Spenser Survey: Llantrithyd Place was in the wife of John Bassett (of Beaupre), a Welsh heiress. (PM-393.10)
It is said that this John or Hugh was engaged in a duel in which he killed his opponent but then the Crown tooks his lands. (PM-606 pg 5)
John (or Hugh) had a descendant, John Basset, Feoffee to part of the estate of Sir Matthew Cradock. (PM-606 pg 5)
1397 John Basset was a witness to the Cardiff Charter. (PM-606 pg 5)
St. Hilary Church (dating to Norman origin) has an altar tomb with the effigy of a knight in armor, representing Thomas Basset of Beaupre (Christopher Bassett’s book says it was high father, John) who died in 1423.
